Shadows... that's our assignment for the week for the Picture of the Day. But, what are shadows? It is the absence of light. Light can be blocked by a variety of things...in this photo, fingers and a cigarette create a "V" shadow on the face of Kim as she lights her cigarette. It doesn't matter really, where the light comes from... you can get interesting shadows almost anywhere.

On a warm summer day, Adam Wiley, pottery instructor at Randolph Community College, is carefully moving a newly fired pot to a bucket filled with wood shavings and strips of newspaper. These ingredients are essential to a process called "Raku"; this creates interesting and unique colors through oxidation or reduction of oxygen, combined with elements of ferric oxide. When the pot is first placed in the bucket, the temperature of the kiln it just came from was approximately 1700 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of the cool things about a rainy day is the aftermath... the water everywhere, the puddles on the roadway, that sort of thing. What is also interesting is the reflectivity of the water. It can see, or reflect, anything it sees, at almost any angle. Here it reflects the neon from a hair salon after a massive downpour in the Triad area, but because of the slight breeze, and additional water falling, the water is not static... it continues to move, but it's almost as if the neon is being blown around too. I really like this effect.
